The Clock is Ticking…COOL Labeling Must Be Gone by May 23, 2013
So says the World Trade Organization.
| The United States must bring its country-of-origin meat labeling rules into compliance with an earlier World Trade Organization ruling by May 23, 2013, according to a WTO decision or face penalties and fines. (The U.S. labeling law requires grocers to put labels on cuts of beef, pork, lamb, chicken and ground meat or post signs that list the origin of the meat.)But over 92% of U.S. consumers favor identification of country of origin (Source: WTO). And they want to be able to trust that if you say your product is made or grown in the USA, it actually is true.Third-party certifications have, for decades, played the role of overseer for other standards important to your customer— like kosher or organic seals. Now that the US is forced to comply with the WTO, only an independent resource can offer compelling proof to your customers that the product is, indeed, fulfilling its promises.
We can help. Whether it’s meat, produce, store brands or your brands, if it’s made in the USA, your customers want to know. They want assurance that they can count on. And the clock is ticking.
